Chute

Newsrooms and consumer brands increasingly use photos and video posted by the public to websites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Vine. San Francisco-based Chute has created a system for finding, managing and publishing social media content that also includes a system for securing rights to reproduce the content from the person who created it. Project Thunderdome

In 2012, Digital First Media created Project Thunderdome as an editorial support and content-sharing service for its 75 daily newspapers. GeekWire

GeekWire is one of many online news sites that generate part of their income in nontraditional ways, such as events and sponsorships. Now the tech reporting site has added another revenue strategy: health insurance. Newstracker

A new smartphone app and web-based system called Newstracker, built by a company called Interapt, was designed to help newsrooms connect their teams in the field with story assignments and to guide the reporters to where the news is happening. Paladin

Video production equipment continues to shrink in size. For example, a startup called Paladin Innovators has created a single device for live streaming, switching, recording and editing that fits into a backpack and can connect to multiple video sources including traditional cameras, Google Glass and iPhones.
